Our core book for the last two weeks has been “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen. The children have really enjoyed listening to the story as a song with repeating patterns that aid independent retelling, building confidence in narrative whilst enjoying the rhythmic, chant-like structure.
They have used resources from the classroom to bring the story to life as well as acting the story out, using onomatopoeic sounds from the story to make it more real! We had some excellent mud squelching noises, showing how children connect language sounds to physical experiences whilst developing phonological awareness through playful sound-making.
In the garden, we have been exploring the feel of moss and different twigs and plant materials, discovering the varied textures and properties of natural objects. The children have been growing their own ‘plants’ in pots, learning about plant care whilst developing patience and responsibility as they nurture their growing creations.
