Mathematics has been at the heart of learning in Rosemary Class 2 this week, with children exploring number, measurement and shape through a range of practical, hands-on experiences.
During bread baking, children developed their understanding of early mathematical concepts by counting cups of flour and learning the difference between a half and a full cup. Through measuring ingredients and following a simple process, they were building confidence with number recognition, counting and comparing quantities. This learning continued at the water station, where children made predictions about how many scoops of water would fill a jug before it overflowed, encouraging them to think critically about capacity and measurement.
In the garden, children harvested potatoes and used mathematical language to compare and sort them by size. They discussed which potatoes were the smallest and largest, helping to strengthen their understanding of comparison, ordering and observation.
Shape recognition has also been a key focus. Using magnetic shapes, children explored how flat 2D shapes can be combined to create 3D structures. During group times, they reinforced their knowledge of squares, rectangles, triangles and circles, identifying their features and talking about what makes each shape unique.
These meaningful, play-based experiences help children develop a strong foundation in mathematical thinking while encouraging curiosity, problem-solving and communication. We look forward to building on these practical maths skills next term. Thank you for your support over the last few weeks, and we hope you all have a relaxing half-term break.
