Children in Green Room at The Limes Nursery School have been developing their listening skills through a fun Phase 1 phonics activity using mystery sound socks. The children shook and explored the socks, listening carefully to the different sounds and making predictions about what might be hidden inside. Coins were easy to identify, but the stones, cutlery and conkers encouraged children to listen more closely and think carefully about the differences between the sounds they could hear.

During maths, children practised recognising numerals and matching them to quantities. They counted out coloured cylinders and matched the correct number of cylinders to each numeral, developing their counting skills and understanding of number. The children then challenged themselves to build towers with the cylinders, carefully balancing them to see how high they could build without them toppling over.

These activities supported children’s early phonics and mathematical development while encouraging problem-solving, concentration and perseverance as they explored, listened and learned together.
