This week in Yellow Room at St Werburgh’s Nursery School, the children became fascinated by creating their own treasure maps. As they worked, they began to notice the different marks and lines they were making, using these to represent pathways and routes. This supported early mark making, helping children to give meaning to their drawings and develop their ideas through symbols and lines.
This interest naturally led into marble rolling, where children were excited to see where the marbles would travel and the paths they would create. They watched closely as the marbles moved, building curiosity about cause and effect while strengthening their focus and observation skills.
The children then explored different ways of moving the trays to change the marbles’ direction. They experimented with tilting, lifting and adjusting angles, developing their problem solving and physical coordination. These experiences supported early mathematical thinking as children noticed patterns, direction and movement, while also encouraging collaboration as they shared ideas and worked alongside one another.
