There has been a wonderful buzz of excitement in the Willow Room at The Limes lately, as the children have been thoroughly enjoying their time on the bikes in the garden. To support this blossoming interest, we decided to dive deeper into the world of cycling together. We began our journey by looking at a special diagram to help identify different parts of a bicycle, which was a fantastic way to build new vocabulary. We also started a dedicated floor book to capture all of the children’s thoughts and discoveries as they learn how things work.
Our storytime became even more magical with the tale of Mrs Armitage on Wheels by Quentin Blake. The children were captivated by how she makes her bike unique, which sparked plenty of creative conversation. A real highlight for everyone was a very special visit from a bike mechanic named Nelson, who is a friend of Constance. Constance kindly brought her own bike into the Willow Room, and Nelson showed the children exactly how the pedals, chain, and brakes function.
This hands-on experience is a brilliant way to cover the early years goal of Understanding the World. The children were eager to get involved, and everyone had a go at using a pump to inflate an inner tube. To make sure there were enough wheels for everyone to enjoy some physical exercise, we even borrowed extra bikes from the Red and Green rooms. To finish our busy day, the children worked together to give all the bikes a refreshing wash with soapy water, making sure they are ready for our next garden adventure.
