The children in Green Room at The Limes have been following their curiosity about the spiky seed cases falling from the tree in the garden. After collecting them, the children used them alongside conkers gathered from the local area to create patterns and textures in clay. They carefully pressed the natural materials into the clay, noticing the different shapes, marks and impressions they could make.
The exploration continued with herbs from the garden, as children used a pestle and mortar to release the scents of lemon balm and mint. There were lots of conversations about the different smells, with children comparing, describing and sharing their ideas about what they noticed. This hands-on sensory experience encouraged observation, language development and curiosity about the natural world.
The children have also been busy baking bread. They followed a recipe together, measuring and mixing ingredients before watching the dough change as it was prepared. Taking their bread home to share with their families gave the children a real sense of pride in their achievement and helped them see the purpose of following instructions and working together.
