There was great excitement at The Limes Nursery School this afternoon as the children discovered that the peas and lettuces in their garden were ready to pick and enjoy. The children carefully harvested the vegetables themselves, showing growing confidence and independence as they explored where food comes from. Using all of their senses, they touched, smelt and closely observed the vegetables before bravely tasting them, supporting their curiosity and developing their understanding of the world around them.

These hands-on experiences also created rich opportunities for language development, as the children described textures, colours and flavours, and shared their thoughts with one another. Moments like these support early scientific thinking, as children notice changes over time and begin to make connections between planting, growing and harvesting. There was lots of conversation about what might be ready next, encouraging prediction and excitement for future discoveries in the garden.

Alongside their gardening adventures, the children also enjoyed creating wonderful chalk artwork on the chalkboard. This gave them space to express their creativity, practise mark-making, and share their ideas visually with their friends.
