At the start of the week, the children have been busy in the garden making bird feeders with Elly! Everyone loved getting stuck in and learning about what birds like to eat and how we can help them whilst developing understanding of caring for wildlife. The seeds have disappeared off of our bird feeders very quickly, showing that the birds are appreciating our efforts! We’ve also been busy looking for worms and other minibeasts in the garden, discovering the creatures that share our outdoor space.
At the end of the week we have been reading Anna Llenas’ book “The Colour Monster.” This book is a favourite because it does a great job of explaining feelings to the children in a way that is accessible to them! We all explored pulling different faces to show our feelings, as well as making artwork to capture feelings using colours with intention, connecting emotions to visual representation.
The children have also been talking about the things that make us feel happy, sad, and angry, developing emotional literacy and self-awareness. We have been introducing the word ‘calm’ and thinking about ways to feel calm – everyone’s favourite has been ‘balloon breathing’. Why not see if your child can show you at home?
