Green and Green 2 classrooms have continued to welcome, settle, and include new children. This is going really well with children establishing new relationships with one another, building friendships and learning to play collaboratively in their new environment.
The book we have been focusing upon this week is called “You Choose.” Our particular focus when reading this story is to look, notice, and comment on the pictures in the book, to use vocabulary to imagine and pretend, and encouraging children to explain their choices and share their thoughts. This approach develops children’s ability to express preferences whilst building descriptive language and reasoning skills.
We have spent some time focusing on children identifying their own names in print. This means children hearing the initial sound in their names, which develops their phonological awareness, and encouraging focus upon the shapes they can see represented in the letters of their names. Children can develop their sense of belonging by using their names to self-register that they have arrived in the morning, creating ownership and independence in their daily routine.
