This month, Class 1 at Rosemary Nursery School has been inspired by a poem we are learning for Black History Month. The poem describes a rainbow, so children spent time exploring colours, colour mixing and finding different colours around the room to create their own rainbow. As the poem asks, “Black is…?”, we made black the biggest colour in our rainbow and talked together about what black means to us. Children shared their own ideas, including “my hair”, “my trousers” and “my skin”. These conversations encouraged children to reflect on their own identities and listen to the experiences and ideas of others.
Children also enjoyed a wonderful sensory experience exploring shaving foam and mixing powder paints. There was lots of excitement as they watched colours change and combine to create new ones. Some children explored colour mixing by holding hands and working together, while others focused on the marks and patterns they could make. Through these experiences, children developed their communication skills, curiosity and creativity as they investigated how colours interact.
Outside, children have been busy building ramps for their cars. Working together, they experimented with different designs and tested how well their ramps worked. This play encouraged mathematical language as children talked about speed, direction and distance, while also developing their problem-solving skills and perseverance.
Well done, Class 1!
