The children in Yellow Room at St Werburgh’s Park Nursery School have been inspired by our core book Zoom! by Trish Cooke. Through painting and playful exploration, they have been bringing the story to life in lots of creative ways.
Just like Hurricane Kieron in the story, the children have been busy making marks and creating artwork using brushes, their hands, toy cars and even monster trucks. As they painted, they experimented with different tools and movements, noticing the patterns and tracks they could make. These experiences support children’s creativity, curiosity and understanding of cause and effect as they explore different ways to express their ideas.
The children have also been investigating what happens to the water when they wash their paint-covered hands. They made predictions, shared their ideas and watched closely as the water changed colour. “What colour will it be?” was a question that sparked lots of discussion, and the answer was a very muddy brown!
Inspired by the playful language in Zoom!, the children explored the sounds they make during everyday activities. Together they listened to the sounds of eating food, brushing teeth and running as fast as they could, creating their own noisy versions of “Chomp chomp, zoom, zigga zigga zoom!” This supported children’s communication and language skills as they listened carefully, shared ideas and experimented with words and sounds.
It has been wonderful to see the children’s imagination and enthusiasm as they explored the story through painting, investigation and sound.
