Children in the Green and Green 2 Rooms at The Limes Nursery School have been thoroughly enjoying the story The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear. The story has sparked lots of curiosity and conversation, with children eagerly joining in with repeated phrases and using new vocabulary linked to the characters and events.

The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and THE BIG HUNGRY BEAR
As part of this learning, children explored real strawberries during group time and at snack time. They compared size and weight, counted how many strawberries they had, and talked about which were bigger or smaller. These hands-on experiences support early mathematical development in a meaningful and engaging way, while also encouraging children to describe what they can see, feel and taste.
The story has also provided rich opportunities to develop language, particularly around positional words such as under, behind and inside, as children retell parts of the story and act it out in play. Alongside this, children have been taking part in ‘real life’ mark making, including writing their names and creating simple lists. This purposeful writing helps children to build physical control and understand that marks carry meaning.
To support children who will soon be moving on to school, a ‘school role play’ area will be set up this week, complete with uniforms. This will give children the chance to explore their ideas about school, act out familiar routines and build confidence in a playful and supportive way.
