Willow Room at The Limes has been continuing to enjoy The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle this week, and the learning has been as delicious as it sounds!
Alongside practising counting skills, the children have been getting hands-on with the very fruits that the caterpillar munches through in the story, including apples, pears, plums, strawberries and oranges. The smelling and tasting went down a treat, with the plums and strawberries proving to be particular favourites!
The children also had a go at chopping the fruit themselves using a knife, which was a brilliant opportunity to develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. We talked carefully about how to hold both the knife and the fruit safely before using a sawing motion to cut, and the children took it all very seriously. There is something so satisfying about preparing your own food, and the children were incredibly proud of themselves.
