Willow Room at The Limes has been following a wonderful child-led journey into the world of minibeasts, and it has taken us in some really exciting directions!

It all started with the children’s own curiosity. We created a floor book together to capture what the children already knew and what they wanted to find out, and it quickly became clear that the life cycle of caterpillars was top of the list! The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Nature Trail by Benjamin Zephaniah have both been enjoyed along the way, sparking brilliant conversations and feeding the children’s growing fascination with the natural world.

Alongside this, we noticed the children were keen to represent insects in their own artwork, which gave us a wonderful opportunity to introduce them to The Snail by Henri Matisse. Inspired by his collage technique, the children created their own beautiful artworks capturing a variety of minibeasts. The results have been stunning and it has been a joy to see the children engage with a real piece of art and make it their own.
