This week in Willow the children showed an interest in birthdays after we celebrated the birthdays of two of our lovely friends. We thought about the different ways we celebrate birthdays and this discussion went into all areas of the nursery, demonstrating how a meaningful topic can inspire learning across the entire environment.
We’ve been writing recipes and baking in the mud kitchen and the home corner, and writing birthday cards in the creative area, developing early mark-making and writing skills through purposeful activities. The children have also explored making birthday cakes with clay whilst creating three-dimensional celebratory treats, and of course doing some excellent dancing outside to celebrate in style!
We also added party hats to the home corner which led to an interest in making our own party crowns using collage materials, extending the celebration theme into creative design and construction. What a fun week!
