Our commitment to outdoor learning at St Werburgh’s Park Nursery is evident in our comprehensive gardening programme, where children experience the entire growing cycle, from seed to plant. We believe it’s essential for children to connect with nature and understand where food comes from.

Our budding gardeners choose their own tools and carefully dig small holes in the soil we have prepared together, developing their understanding of space and learning about appropriate sizing. Our practitioners support the children as they gently place seeds into their prepared holes, teaching them about careful handling and what growing plants need to thrive.

The watering process provides even more learning opportunities as children fill their individual watering cans and carefully water their newly planted seeds. This final step in the planting process helps children understand how to care for plants and the ongoing responsibility that comes with nurturing living things.

These practical gardening experiences support many areas of children’s development, including helping them understand the world around them, developing their physical skills, and growing their personal, social and emotional development. The children learn patience, responsibility, and develop an appreciation for the natural world through these hands-on experiences in our nursery garden.

This approach helps children become caring and responsible individuals who understand their connection to the natural environment.
